Medical Laboratory Science

Medical Laboratory Science

Overview
Medical laboratory science is that branch of medicine concerned with the performance of laboratory analyses used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This profession combines the challenges and rewards of medicine and science.

A medical laboratory technician may perform laboratory tests from the most routine to the most complex. As medical investigators, they are responsible for the operation of complex equipment, computers and precision instruments that cost millions of dollars. They are trained to work in the five major areas of the laboratory: blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology.

The SouthArk degree program is a minimum two-year curriculum including a solid foundation in natural sciences and a broad background in medical laboratory science as well as core courses in English, math, psychology and computer science to provide the student with a well-rounded education. The curriculum consists of at least two years of course work on the campus and in the clinical setting at an affiliated hospital or clinic.

Admission to the clinical program must be applied for and obtained on a competitive basis, with cumulative grade-point average’s being a very important factor (2.5 minimum). Upon completion of this clinical training, a student will receive an associate’s degree and then be eligible to take a nationally-recognized certification examination.

Some graduates then elect to transfer into a bachelor’s-degree medical lab science program.
