Smoking Policy
State law and College policy prohit the use any tobacco product on campus.
As of July 21, 2006, workplaces and public areas throughout Arkansas are smoke-free. In accordance with The Arkansas Clean Indoor Air Act of 2006 (Act 8 of the 1st Extraordinary Session of the 85th General Assembly) smoking is prohibited in all vehicles and enclosed areas owned, leased, or operated by the State of Arkansas. Inasmuch, all property owned, leased, or operated by South Arkansas Community College is designated as tobacco-free.
The Clean Air on Campus Act of 2009 (ACT 734) prohibits smoking on campuses of state-supported institutions of higher education beginning August 1, 2010. Any person who violates the provisions of this Act by carrying a lighted tobacco product will be punished by a fine of not less than $100.00 dollars and not more than $500.00
The Arkansas Tobacco Quitline is your direct line to help. It is a free resource available to help Arkansas tobacco users quit. The Quitline can be reached by calling 1-800-QUI T-NOW, and tobacco users can enroll by phone, Internet or fax.
The Quitline uses a combination of motivational counseling with a trained Quit Coach® and nicotine replacement therapy medications such as patches and lozenges to help tobacco users fight their addiction. Quit Coaches are professionally trained to help tobacco users:
•Prepare to quit•Choose a quit day•Change their routines•Cope with withdrawal•Fight slips and relapsesThe Quitline offers a specialized program for tobacco users who are pregnant. They receive up to 10 calls with relapse prevention sensitivity. The first five or six calls will be completed within 60 to 90 days of enrollment. One call will be delivered 30 days prior to the planned due date. At least two postpartum contacts will be made.Quitline coaching services are available to 16 and 17-year-olds. However, tobacco users must be 18 or older to qualify for the free medications.The Arkansas Tobacco Quitline is funded by Tobacco Settlement Proceeds through the Arkansas Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program but is operated by Free & Clear, Inc. The Quitline is available seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Services are available in English, Spanish, Marshallese and more than 160 other languages.
When tobacco users call, they will receive:
- Free, confidential, non-judgmental expert support from a Quit Coach® to help make a plan to quit tobacco.
- Ongoing Quit Coach® support via phone or online, tailored to the specific needs of all tobacco users, including smokeless tobacco users. Women who are pregnant are eligible for a specialized cessation program with additional benefits.
- Unlimited access to Web Coach™, an interactive, online community that offers tools to quit, social support and information about quitting.
- Customized, motivational e-mails sent throughout the quitting process.
- Help with identifying the best cessation aid, as well as dose and duration. Some aids can be mailed directly to the tobacco user’s home, including free patches and lozenges (while supplies last).
- Referral to local community resources and/or benefits offered through employers or health plans.
- Printed Quit Guides – a series of workbooks that offer guidance and support throughout the quitting process.
